FAQ

The name we loved, trademarked
We now run INPI checks before we fall in love with anything.
Delivered in the wrong colour profile
RGB for a print job. The client was gracious. We were not gracious with ourselves.
The rebrand nobody asked for
We redesigned a logo the client had not asked us to touch. They hated it. Brief-reading is a skill.
Week-three scope explosion
We said yes to every addition. The project took four months. We have a change-order form now.
The font that was not licensed
Caught it before print. Only cost us one very stressful afternoon.
Sent the wrong final files
Version 3 instead of version 7. We triple-check file names before every handoff now.

The story so far (it involves a lot of coffee and one very bad logo)

Magistrate 247 started in 2018 in a shared studio on Rua Augusta in São Paulo, with Rafael Mendonçaça, a second-hand Wacom tablet, and a client list that consisted entirely of one friend's food truck. The name came from…

What Brand Strategy Actually Means for Small Businesses

The phrase 'brand strategy' gets used to mean almost everything. Positioning. Tone of voice. A mood board. A mission statement. A deck with a lot of circles on it. We have seen all of these presented as brand strategy, and most of them are not. Here is what it actually is, and why it matters before you spend anything on design.

How to Brief a Branding Agency Without Wasting Anyone's Time

The brief is the most important document in a branding project. Not the final logo. Not the guidelines. The brief. A good brief produces better work in less time. A bad brief produces revisions, misaligned expectations, and a final result that nobody is quite happy with. Here is how to write one that works.

Why You Should Check the Trademark Register Before Falling in Love With a Name

We have watched clients fall in love with a name, build a brand around it, print packaging, register a domain, and then discover that the name is already registered in their category at the INPI. It is an expensive and demoralising experience. It is also entirely avoidable. Here is what you need to know about trademark screening before you commit to a name.

Rafael Mendonça
Founder, Established since 2018

Rafael Mendonça

Rafael Mendonçaça studied graphic design at FAAP in São Paulo, graduating in 2012, and spent five years at a mid-sized communications agency in Pinheiros before deciding that the briefing process there was broken beyond repair. He left in 2017, spent a year doing freelance identity work for small food and retail brands, and founded Magistrate 247 in 2018. He is obsessive about type: he keeps a running document of every typeface he has considered and rejected for a project, currently running to 340 entries. He also makes a very average sourdough loaf every Sunday, which the team tolerates with good humour.
