Rebranding is expensive, time-consuming, and disruptive. It is also sometimes exactly the right thing to do. The problem is that 'we need a rebrand' is often a diagnosis that arrives before the symptoms have been properly examined. Here is how to tell the difference between a brand that needs to change and a business that needs to solve a different problem.

Signs that a rebrand is genuinely warranted

Your business has changed significantly and your brand no longer reflects what you do or who you serve. You are entering a new market where your current identity creates confusion or negative associations. You have merged with or acquired another business and need a unified identity. Your visual identity is so dated that it is actively undermining trust with the customers you most want to reach. These are real reasons to rebrand.

Signs that something else is the problem

Sales are down. Customers are not returning. You are losing pitches. These are business problems, and a new logo will not fix them. Before you commission a rebrand, it is worth asking whether the brand is actually the cause of the problem, or whether the brand is just the most visible thing to change when you are not sure what else to do. We have turned down rebrand briefs for this reason.

The audit before the redesign

If you do decide to rebrand, start with an audit. Find out what equity exists in your current brand before you dismantle it. Colours, names, and even specific graphic elements can carry genuine recognition that is worth preserving. The Teles Distribuidora rebrand we completed in 2024 kept the original orange because the audit showed it was the most recognised element of the brand in their market. The rebrand was better for it.

How long a rebrand takes

A proper rebranding project, including audit, strategy, visual identity, and guidelines, takes 10 to 14 weeks with a studio like ours. If someone is offering you a rebrand in two weeks, ask what they are skipping. The answer is usually the strategy, which is the part that makes the visual work make sense.

If you are not sure whether you need a rebrand or something else, get in touch with us. We will ask you the right questions and give you an honest answer, even if that answer is 'not yet.'
